At the White Sands Test Facility (WSTF) the compatibility of materials and components used in oxygen-enriched and other oxidizing environments is a critical issue in space, aircraft, medical, underwater diving, and industrial applications due to inherent risk of fire. When designing, maintaining, and operating oxygen and other oxidizer systems; understanding and preventing the fire hazards decreases the risks and potential effects on personnel and systems.

With nearly 50 years of oxygen compatibility research and oxygen system testing, WSTF engineers have gained worldwide recognition and developed a wide array of test methods and data generated on the performance of materials and components in the presence of oxygen and other oxidizers.
